Kendra stilled, letting her body relax and her mind take in everything around her. The voice belonged to the same bastard who’d attacked her before. She’d gone soft in ‘rejoining’ society. This was the price.

“Let her go, asshole. She doesn’t have what you want.” Conner sidestepped to give himself space.

If she reacted, Conner would die.

Not today.

Her assailant shifted so his back was to the vehicle. If he sought security in that position, he was indeed an idiot.

Kendra fisted her hands at her sides. Her conversation with Dani earlier helped complete the picture of her brother’s demise. Though the data hadn’t been deciphered, they knew its origin.

“On the contrary. She’s exactly what I want at the moment. I love a good piece, willing or not, doesn’t matter. In order to keep this short, give me the envelope, Conner, and I’ll consider letting her live.”

“Stupid asshat, kill me and your boss will end you in horrific ways even I wouldn’t wanna contemplate. I hear Kyu-Chul has friends who are very inventive.” Kendra felt the brief pause in her abductor’s grip.

“And why would he care about a street rat like you?” The gunman’s right hand loosened around her shoulder and dropped to squeeze her breast.

“Because I’m one of three he’s searching for, idiot.” Foul breath washed over Kendra’s face in a whoosh. The second of distraction granted time to visualize her moves.

“Then maybe I’ll just take you now. Hell, I could’ve saved myself a lot of trouble from the beginning.” The gun barrel swung in Conner’s direction.

“Shoot me, and you won’t get the envelope. How happy would that make your boss?”

“Doesn’t have to be a kill shot…”

“And you don’t think the sound of a gunshot will bring tons of witnesses from inside? You don’t hear music yet, asshole.”

With no room between them, she couldn’t snatch the knife from her back pocket. Helpless and under threat wasn’t a good fit.

“Hmm, then I think I’ll just take her with me. You can imagine the fun I’ll have.” Stroking the side of her face he added, “You’ll come to think of me as good-time Charlie.”

“You’ll be dead before we can have any fun. Trust me, Charlie.”

Charlie chuckled low in her ear. “I promise to turn you over to my boss once I get the envelope. That sounds fair. The sooner I get it, the less you suffer.”

Kendra sidestepped in time with her attacker to prevent stumbling. Once beyond the plane of the vehicle, he swung the barrel away from Conner.

What she didn’t count on—her aggressor had an accomplice, heard but not seen. In her mind’s eye, thug two stood behind and to the right of her position.

“C’mon. Let’s get out of here. This place gives me the creeps.”

The minute the gun barrel swung away from Conner, Kendra elbowed her adversary in the gut and stomped his instep. Reaching for her knife in swinging around, she noted the open mouth, seen through one of three holes in the black mask.

“Fuck you both.” The blade tearing through flesh and nerves of his wrist assured the gun dropped from his hand.
